Developing a website, an application or any kind of software can sometimes have unexpected twists even though you thought you covered every case. One case that you never really read anything about is when thing can become victim to its own success. When dealing with clients you mostly get lost in technical details and functional aspects but talking about the case of Uber-success is quickly taking the ridiculous route hence never really followed thoroughly and left unattended. Until success kicks in like a moody child just rampaging through your databases, making your (not too much optimized) scripts force clients or servers on its knees and finally making your product collapse like a cardhouse. Yeah.

This happened to our Big Love Facebook Application which became pretty unstable after countless users signed the Goodbye Cards. The Database started piling up entries, the scripts dealing with it went berserk over searching random entries and the client simply wasn’t too smooth any more animating and displaying the countless signatures and comments. Luckily we managed to locate the bottlenecks faster than the client reached boiling temperature and fixed it all up nicely.

Learning a lesson this way might be the hard way sometimes, but it makes sure that during technical conception you also consider the unthinkable: too much success.
